William “Bill” Robert Gill Sr., age 77 of Monroe, passed away unexpectedly March 6, 2025.
Born October 20, 1947 in Lanark Holler, West Virginia. William was the son of William Joseph and Gaye Virginia (Lawson) Gill. He graduated 1965 from Jefferson High School, where he lettered in football. Bill, as he was called for most of his life, worked at Chrysler Trenton Engine Plant for over 42 years, retiring in 2007. William married Mary Burnett on October 20, 2023.
The Gill Patriarch was an avid deer hunter. It was a lifelong hobby of his and he would often take trips to hunt elk, caribou, moose and deer. Several of children and grandchildren also learned to love hunting on “the farm” with him.
Bill also had a passion for softball. He played/umped actively for over 60 years. Some of his closest friendships were made on the ball field from teams such as Gallina’s Auto Repair, Kip n Carol’s Softball Team, the Local UAW team and a host of other teams. He began umpiring after he could no longer play at the level he wanted too.
Bill loved spending time with his entire family, but he truly was an active Grandpa for his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He often attended their school events, took them hunting or engaged in calls to catch up.
William was sadly preceded in death by his dear brother, Thomas Gill and his son, James Bruce Gill.
Bill leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Mary. They enjoyed traveling to Disneyland.
He also leaves behind to cherish his memory six children: William Gill Jr., Kimberly Shuler, Justin Ridgeway, Brian (Corey) Gill, Hollee Gill and Jacob Gill; 18 grandchildren: Marcus, Chantel, William, Kallie, Sydnee, Bailee (Tjohn), Nicolas, Timothy (Courtney), Katie, Walker, Owen, Rylynn, Wyatt, Millee, Scotlyne, Kassian, Atlas, Reign. Grandpa Bill also will be cherished by 10 great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, it is William’s wish that you make a donation to The American Cancer Society https://www.cancer.org/
