Walter M. Bavaird

Walter M. Bavaird; age 94, April 24, 2018, longtime resident of Trenton and member of the First Presbyterian Church of Trenton. Beloved husband of the late Dorothy. Loving father of Nancy Whyte and Gary (Gail) Bavaird. Dearest grandfather of Laura Bavaird. Walter was born January 18, 1924 in Glasgow, Scotland. At 6 months old he boarded a ship with his mother Mary, sister Isabelle and brother Francis. He headed off to America to join his dad (David) who came over to America earlier to find work. David found employment at Detroit Edison. Walter was very involved as a boy with First Presbyterian Church when it was located on Cherry Street in Trenton and later as it moved to West Road. While attending Trenton High School,Walter was a track star, played basketball and football. During Walter's senior year his father passed away and he needed to find work to support the family. He worked at Firestone Steel Products as a switchboard operator after school. Walter also worked at Elliott's Bakery as a young man. (After he retired, he would spend many hours enjoying a muffin and coffee with his friend, Cal Isselhardt, and the gang.) After high school he went to work at Willow Run Bomber Plant building B-24 Bombers -- a plane that he would soon be on board as a Belly Gunner in WWII as a member of the Army Air Corp. After the war, Walter followed in his father's footsteps and went to work at Detroit Edison-Trenton Channel Power Plant. He started out at the bottom and with continued education worked his way to a Supervisory position. When Walter reached 62, his wife, Dorothy, said, "Walt, it's time to retire". Being a good husband he said, yes dear and the two of them began to see the world together. After Dorothy passed in 2001, Walter went back to his roots and began baking. He would deliver cookies to shut-ins, friends and family. He loved to bake. Walt was twice named "Senior of the Year" in Trenton and the 2017 Co-Grand Marshal of the Trenton Memorial Day Parade with his buddy Cal Isselhardt.
