Born in Monroe, Van was the son of George and Frances (Ayers) Hammack. He attended Monroe High School and then worked over 37 years as a Boiler Operator for Monroe Public Schools, retiring in 2015. Van married the love of his life, Dionicia "Dee" Stuart-Smith of September 24, 2005. Van enjoyed golfing, softball and was an avid NASCAR fan. Van leaves to cherish his memory, Dee, his wife of the past 13 years; his children: Rendon Hammack of Monroe, Albert Smith of Montgomery, Alabama and Eric Smith of Meridian, Mississippi; a brother George (Linda) Hammack of Monroe and a sister Donna Peirce of Harrison; four grandchildren; as well as three sisters-in-law: Karen (Wayne) Fortenberry of Nashville, Tennessee, Janice (Jimmy) Stewart of Gulfport, Mississippi and Robin (James) Wilson of Columbus, Georgia; and two brothers-in-law: Teddy Stuart of Hattiesburg, Mississippi and Tracy(Sherry) Stuart of Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Sadly he was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Larry Hammack and Ivan Hammack; and two sisters: Yvonne Carpenter and Judy Ray.
