Roderick J. Socull

Roderick Joseph Socull , 81, of Allen Park, Mi. passed away on June 27, 2020 after a long battle with illness. Rod was a beloved husband, father, step father, grandfather, and step grandfather. Rod was born Feb 10 1939 in Ironwood, Mi. to Joseph & Susan (Gondek ) Socull. After Joseph's untimely passing. Susan eventually remarried and he was lovingly raised along with his sister Delores "Dolly" by his mother and step dad Henry "Hank" Swoish. After graduating Allen Park High School in 1956,for a short time he went to school for engineering/drafting as he had a knack for drawing and figuring things out. In 1956 he met and fell in love with Barbara Sadler, they wed on Sept 03, 1960, going on to have 2 children, Roderick & Deborah. He was passionate and extremely good at fixing things up and make them more beautiful. He took great pride in whatever he did, whether landscaping, working on home projects, or the occasional car restoration project. He even built an remarkably beautiful house in Georgia in which the family lived for a few years before moving back to Michigan. It gave him great pleasure to host barbeques with family and friends and to have everyone over for large holiday celebrations. In 1985 he and Barbara divorced and although their relationship turned out to be less than permanent they parted on good terms. Rod enjoyed going to the Moose Club which is where he met Mildred "Millie" Springer. Their love grew and on June 08, 1991 they were married. He loved and accepted Millie's family as his own, especially her children Cindy, Terry, Jerry, Cheryl, and Robert and their families. He was a proud GM man, having retired from General Motors/ Hydromatic plant in Ypsilanti. He really loved to go up north with Millie and their beloved puppies. He enjoyed being outside, having a couple a beers and putzing around working on things. As he used to like to say " It's 12 O'clock somewhere, when you are retired you don't have to wait till 5 anymore". He also looked forward to going to the Casino with family. That's not to say that he didn't enjoy sneaking down there by himself every now and then. Later he developed several serious health issues which he successfully battled one after the other, always surprising us how strong he was and that he still had his sense of humor and genuine sweetness. His nephew Tim and especially his wife Socorro helped out so much during this difficult time. He really appreciated everything they did. This last battle was just too much for him and although he wanted to stay, he was extremely tired and this time when the Lord called him home, he went. He is free from pain and suffering and at long last at peace. He is preceded in death by: father Joseph Socull, mother Susan (Socull)Swoish, step father Henry Swoish, step son Jerry Springer. Rod is survived by: wife Mildred Socull, son Roderick (Cindi) Socull, daughter Debbie (Bob) Blevins, step sons Terry(Elizabeth) Springer, Robert Springer, step daughters Cheryl (David) Kocaj, Cindi (Chuck) Holsing, sister Delores Munoz, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and several other family and friends. A memorial service is to be held on a future date.
