Robert John Nykiel, Sr.

Nykiel, Robert J. Sr., Age 88, of Grosse Ile. July 3, 2009. Beloved husband of the late Eileen. Loving Father of Robert Nykiel, Jr., Mary Lynn Nykiel, Richard (Margaret) Nykiel, Edward (Debbie) Nykiel. Proud Papa of Derek, Morgan and Ethan. Robert graduated in 1938 from St. Alphonsus H.S. and attended Michigan State College. He was a corsair pilot in WW II and later a reserve at Grosse Ile N.A.S until retiring at the rank of Major. He distinguished himself in various careers as a builder, developer, mechanical contractor, estimator and salesman. He was active in the VFW and as an usher at Sacred Heart Church for over 50 years. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed crossword puzzles and was completely devoted to his family. He was a kid at heart, always talking and joking with youngsters. Funeral was Tuesday 10 a.m. from Sacred Heart Church. Interment at Our Lady of Hope Cemetery. Memorials to Arbor Hospice or Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
