Robert was born in Bad Axe, Michigan and had many happy memories with his family at his grandparents’ farms. Later he lived in Berkley, Michigan, and had a paper route and worked at his uncle’s Dairy Queen. He did his undergrad education at Wayne State, and graduated from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1970. Robert interned at Riverside Hospital in Trenton, and was a part of the last doctor draft into the Army from 1971 to 1973. Returning home, he set up medical practices in Taylor, Lincoln Park and Riverview, and was chief of Family Practice at Southshore Hospital in Trenton until he retired in 2008. While Robert was busy with his medical practice, he was very active in his church, Community of Christ in Riverview. He was an ordained elder, and later High Priest, serving not only his local congregation, but cooking at camps, reunions, and women’s retreats. He was well known for his delicious meals as well as special desserts. Due to the effects of Parkinson’s, Robert had resided at Hampton Manor of Trenton, and received services from Angela Hospice. Our family is grateful for the loving care that was provided to him. It is difficult to mention all the good that Robert did in his lifetime, and his life was definitely one well spent. No matter how busy he was, he always made time for his family.
Robert is survived by his loving wife, Marie and children, Timothy (Amy) Smith, Jeremy (Jennifer) Smith, Jonathan (Allison) Smith and Olivia Melton. He was affectionately known as Abba to grandchildren, Avery and Sophie Melton, Kelsey and Karsyn Smith and Daryan Morton. He is also survived by siblings, Lewis (Fonnie) Smith, Sharon Van Dam, and James (Madelyn) Smith. He was predeceased by his parents, Allen and Leta Smith.
