Rita Marie LaPointe took her last breath on July 26, 2023 at Seacrest Nursing Facility at the age of 102, while under the care of Elara Caring Hospice Care.
She was born in Monroe to Wilfred and Gertrude (Gee) LaPointe on June 30, 1921. She attended St. Mary School until she was sent to Windsor, Ontario to a private school where she was taught by the Ursuline Nuns. They wanted to keep her but her mother refused, wanting her back home. She returned to Monroe where she became a visible, spirited fixture in the city as she made her daily rounds to Kline’s Dept. Store and Mitchell’s Gift Shop greeting her friends. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church until she moved to Marian Place as their first resident. Then she became a member of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, which was right next door. She lived at Marian Place for thirty eight years. She earned her high school diploma in 1987 through the adult education program. She moved to Tendercare Nursing Facility when she broke her leg. It changed ownership and several names during her twelve years there and is now Seacrest Nursing Facility.
In lieu of flowers, donations will be gratefully accepted by The Bed Race to Aid Children, Inc. at 108 Washington St.
She is survived by a nephew, John LaPointe of Monroe, a niece, Faith Ann (Mark) Dudley of Melbourne, Fla.; great nieces, Amity (Michael) Karim of Danville Ca., Jill Walling and Joy (Cliff) Leffler of Melbourne, Fla. The Karims’ children, Kade, Arden and MAK Karim of Danville, Ca. and Charlotte LaPointe, Jaime and Michael Leffler of Melbourne, Fla. And Rita’s guardian, Glee (John) Taylor of Monroe. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Burton J. LaPointe, and two great nephews, John Jr and Michael LaPointe.
