Richard “Dick” Harold Bohland died on January 2, 2022 after a short illness. Dick was the fifth and last child, born to Leo and Eunice Bohland, on December 15th, 1933. In his early years, Dick helped remodel his own home and worked around the house. This was the start of his life-long skills with carpentry. In high school, he played football and graduated from Westlake High School in Ohio in 1951. Dick was drafted into the Army in 1955. He served in the Anti-Aircraft Battery Division and was stationed in Detroit, Michigan. It was during this time that Dick met his first wife, Helen Hauger. Dick and Helen moved their young family to Michigan in 1967. He worked as a carpenter to support the family and spent his free time hunting, woodworking in his basement, and creating wonderful memories for his children. Dick would call Michigan his home for the remainder of his life. Dick met Betty (Olson) Richards while the two were enjoying an adult beverage and after a long courtship, they were married in June of 1983. Dick was a dedicated step -father to Betty’s children, supporting and assisting them in their adulthood. Dick and Betty enjoyed their time together until Betty’s death in 2002. When his career in construction ended early due to an eye injury, Dick started a second career in real estate and owned several rental properties. He spent time managing and maintaining the properties, so his 40+ years as a carpenter and his woodworking skills were put to good use. In 1995, Dick and Dennis opened the Double D’s Bar in Rockwood, Michigan. It was at the Double D’s where Dick’s sense of humor and talents as a storyteller could really shine. He would sit at the bar and enjoy interacting with customers who came for not just a drink and a meal, but for the atmosphere. He is preceded in death by his wife, Betty Bohland, his son Richard A Bohland, and siblings and other loved ones who left before him. Dick Bohland will be greatly missed by all those who survived him, including his children Paula Bohland, Mary Bohland, Leo Bohland, Leo’s wife Lou-Anne Bohland, and Kelly Bohland wife of his deceased son Richard; his stepchildren including Dennis Richards and his wife, Landy May, Debbie Richards, Danny Richards, Dianne Lehr, as well as Renee Kurolvech, his longtime caretaker and the grandchildren and great grandchildren who have heard many stories of their grandpa.
