LENDEL PAULINE SLOAN, GROSSE ILE, MI – PAULINE SLOAN, 67, of Grosse Ile, MI, a longtime creative soul, author, and mother, passed away January 11, 2014. Pauline was born in Olive Hill, Kentucky, on July 9, 1946. Pauline was a highly creative person in virtually everything she pursued. She made beautifully detailed art work for her home and others, jewelry from exquisite stones, gardens that included meticulously pruned roses, gourmet meals and hand-decorated desserts. She especially enjoyed Christmas and preparations for the yearly Christmas Eve family event. She loved, too, to reminisce about her childhood and growing up in Kentucky and central Ohio with many family and friends. In addition to being an author, Pauline's career included work in the retail and food industries. Though these occupations provided a modest income, they more so provided fodder for the stories that Pauline loved weaving either in a conversational retelling or in putting them onto paper. Most notably, she had a novel published entitled Bridges. The story was a fictionalized tale of many aspects of her childhood, especially her relationship with her beloved father. As a mother, Pauline was a wonderful listener, gave good life advice, and provided a liberal perspective. She believed each person was responsible for him or herself and should be able to make choices based on personal circumstances. She also believed in living without expectations and accepting people as they are— both the good and the bad. Pauline had a great sense of humor and was able to see the "big picture" in others' lives. She reminded her children that "no one gets it all" to keep them humble and understand the impermanent nature of all things in life. Finally, and most importantly, she always had faith in her children to do the right things and meet their challenges. Pauline is survived by her four children, Lea Sloan (Cindy Sloan) of IL, Susan (Ken) Muscat of MI, Rebecca (Bryan) McLaughlin of TX, and Patrick (Christine) Champa of MI and seven grandchildren, Brighid and Sean Kuhn, Nicholas and Anthony Muscat, and Patrick, Kaitlin, and Chloe McLaughlin. She was preceded in death by her parents, Martin Van Buren and Lucy (née Dickison) Sloan; her former husband, John Joseph Champa, and two sisters, Jewel Sapp and Amanda Summerford.
