Mrs. Shelby Jean Turpin-Daughenbaugh

October 7, 1937 — June 14, 2011

Mrs. Shelby Jean Turpin-Daughenbaugh

Beloved wife of Bill Daughenbaugh and the late Bill Turpin. Loving mother of Keith (Connie) Turpin and Mark Turpin. Dearest grandmother of Amy (Paul) Nalbach and Kaitlin Turpin and great-grandmother of Kole and Elle Nalbach. Dear sister of Glenn (Ollie) Cabe, Brittie Duncan, Ann Ferguson, Cotton Cabe and Shirley (Okey) Spence. Also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and friends. Family suggests donations to St. Jude Children's Hospital. All who knew Jean, loved her, and will remember forever her fondness for a good laugh, the twinkle in her eyes, and her irrepressible love for life. Among her favorite pastimes were getting away with loved ones at the family’s cabin in Northern Michigan, where she enjoyed gardening and riding her four-wheeler. There or at home in Monroe, she delighted in caring for her family—whether by keeping a spotless house at all times, entertaining her friends with a dash of Southern hospitality, spending time with her grandchildren, sitting for her grand-dog, or cooking favorite family recipes for her husband, Bill. Throughout the years, she enjoyed the company of her beloved cats, including Maggie—her constant companion for the past four years, and the now-deceased Oscar and Pretty Boy, whose ashes will remain with their faithful mistress forever. Jean went through life cultivating friends and caring for them with tenderness, compassion, and a mischievous sense of humor. She guarded close relationships with her two brothers and three sisters back in her native North Carolina, as well as her many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews—all of whom cherished dearly their Aunt Jean. When she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in September of 2010, many of these precious family members made the trip to Michigan to spend time with her in the hospital. She lavished her beloved granddaughters, Amy and Kaitlin, with unconditional love and all the special favor a granny could possibly bestow. Eight months ago, Amy presented her with twin granddaughters, Kole and Elle, who were the apples of their great-grandmother’s eye--two precious new lives that gave Jean deep joy and sustained her during the battle she fought with tenacity, wit, and courage.
