Stanko, Rose Mary "Opal", age 95 formerly of Grosse Ile. Passed suddenly December 16, 2010. Loving mother of Geraldine (John Marsalis) of NV, Elizabeth (George) LaVoie of MI, Paul (Barbara) Stanko of MI, Margaret Stanko of CA and Rosemary (Mark Hutson) of CT. Proud grandmother of Stephanie (Mike) Hyland, Daniel (Melanie) Buchan , Chris (Ericka) Buchan, Jason (Claire) Stanko, Shannon (Jeff) Abraham, Seth Beaulac, Adrian and Tyler Hutson. Great grandmother of Ryan and Anne Marie Buchan, Daniel, Nathan and Reece Buchan, Lily and Riley Abraham and Emily Hyland. Preceded in death by her husband Leonard, a son Joseph, and two brothers Richard and Thomas Stumm. Born January 25, 1915 on Grosse Ile, a fourth generation Islander with fifth, sixth and seventh generation family members still residing on Grosse Ile. At her passing the last surviving graduate of Grosse Ile High School class of 1932, A former employee of the Pennsalt in Wyandotte, she lived through the Great Depression and World War II. While residing on Grosse Ile she was very active in Sacred Heart Church, serving as President of the Altar Society, amongst other responsibilities. Throughout her life she was renowned for her famous fudge. In 1968, she moved to Port Huron, was employed by the Port Huron Times Herald, enjoyed golf, the community and activities around the Blue Water Bridge. In 1987, she moved to the Riverview Housing Co-operative where she was an active participant, serving as President for one term. In 2002, she moved to West Hartford, CT and spent the next 7 years of her life enjoying swimming, playing bridge, family gatherings and numerous activities with the seniors at the West Hartford Senior Center and the Senior organizations at both St. Thomas and St. Peter Claver churches. In 2009, she returned to Michigan where she was able to spend her final months enjoying the attention and devotion of her nearby family members. She lived a full and interesting life and passed peacefully during one of her favorite activities - a card game. She will be missed dearly by her family and friends. At the convenience of friends and family, a celebration of her life will be held on July 9th at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church on Grosse Ile.
