Mercedes was a caring and nurturing wife, mother and friend. She always made visitors to her home feel welcome with a good meal and wonderful conversations in English or Spanish. She always provided her visitors with good advice and guidance, whether from her own wisdom or the gift of fortune telling that was passed down from her mother and grandmother before her. Mercedes was also a talented cook making Mexican cuisine. Her specialties included tamales, enchiladas, mole, and menudo. In addition to being a wonderful cook, she also had many other talents. She was an accomplished seamstress, sewing on a manual foot pedal sewing machine. Mercedes was taught to crochet by her mother Mercedes, creating tablecloths and doilies while passing down the art of crocheting to her granddaughters. Mercedes also enjoyed several hobbies such as gambling, from horse racing to slot machines at the local casinos, and swing dancing with husband Raymond. She also volunteered her time at Holy Redeemer grade school in Detroit where she was known as the popcorn lady during lunch period. Mercedes taught us, touched our hearts and showed us how to laugh and how to be present in the moment with those we love.
