Michael D. Hoffmann

Michael Duane Hoffmann was born November 29, 1954 in Dearborn, Michigan and passed away December 12, 2021. Mike was the oldest of seven children to Duane and Doris Hoffmann. Mike spent his early years tearing up baseball fields and basketball courts in Dearborn Heights and the rest of his life in Dearborn. Mike was simply known as “coach” to so many kids in Dearborn. He coached baseball and basketball for nearly two decades. He loved nothing more than coaching his younger brothers. He always stressed they had to work harder to earn playing time because he never wanted to show favoritism. Mike’s teams played hard, smart and with passion, which is exactly how he coached. In his 20’s, Mike sported his trademark long hair and was fiery on the sidelines. He picked up his fair share of technical fouls. He relished beating coaches who were more traditional and though he was a “hippy”. His players loved that and would run through a wall for coach Mike. His teams rarely lost, and were always prepared. Mike and that long hair grew up during the heyday for live rock music. He attended hundreds of concerts with his brother Tom and friend Kenny Roche. If you were a great band in the early 70’s, Mike saw you play, often multiple times. Mike says Pink Floyd was hands down the best live act ever. He saw them six times! Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Elton John, The Eagles, Black Sabbath, David Bowie, Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind & Fire, Aerosmith, Neil Young, Deep Purple, Jethro Tull, Bob Seger, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Rod Stewart, Boston, Kansas, Chicago, Styx, Fleetwood Mac, Bruce Springsteen, Jeff Beck, Alice Cooper, Moody Blues, Santana, Journey, Eric Clapton, AC/DC, Grand Funk Railroad, Electric Light Orchestra and Credence Clearwater Revival are only the tip of the list. The list goes on and one and Mike remembered vivid details of every show even if there was a certain “smoke” in the air during that time period. Mike treasured the time that he got to spend with his nieces, nurturing them with many trips to the playground and during the holiday get togethers. Mike was great with numbers. He spent 17 years as a dealer at Greektown Casino. His favorite game with spinning the roulette wheel. If you were at a party and the topic came up, you could not escape Mike before you learned what to bet, when to bet, and how much to bet. He had a passion for it and he was great at it. Mike cherished his early memories fishing at the lake with Grandpa Carnecke. He loved the role of protecting his younger brothers and sister is anyone messed with them on the playground. He wasn’t that big, but he wouldn’t back down from anyone. Mike is preceded in death by his parents Duane and Doris, and his brother Tom. He is survived by his siblings Bob (Margaret), Laura (Dave Ksiazek), Don (Beth), Duane (Kerrylynne), and Pat (Dawn Chandler). His nieces Kimberly Ksiazek, Heather Osminski (Dave), Melissa Ksiazek, and Selena Hoffmann. His great nephew Alexander Osminski and great niece Kaitlyn Osminski. We will dearly miss our brother. Our Uncle. Our Friend. Rest in Peace Mike.
