Click on the tribute wall above to view Mary's video tribute. Magdaline Mary Carnarvon, age 96, known to everybody as Mary, died peacefully with family present, March 5, 2020. Mary was born July 20, 1923 in Detroit, Michigan. Mary lived in Detroit on Chipman Street with her parents Chris and Anna James, brothers Bill, Jimmy, Otts, sisters Vicky and Nellie. Mary outlived her parents and all her brothers and sisters. Mary attended school in Detroit and graduated from Western High School in 1941.Mary met the love of her life, Harry Carnarvon, a young Catholic boy, at a neighborhood dance in 1946. They were married June 14, 1947 at St. Vincent Catholic Church in Detroit. The newlywed couple lived in Detroit, near Briggs Stadium until they moved to Allen Park in 1948 and became parishioners of St. Frances Cabrini. They remained in Allen Park, where they became staples of the community, for the rest of their lives, raising 11 children.Mary was a gifted athlete growing up playing many sports, including bowling, softball and was a pentathlon champion in her youth. Mary enjoyed many activities including reading, playing cards (especially poker), going to the casinos, traveling, collecting plates, Christmas ornaments, crystal, even beanie babies.She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Carnarvon. Mary lived on her own for over 30 years. Mary touched many people throughout her life with her good nature, compassion for others and her enormous sense of humor and wit. Mary is survived by her children Janet Hendrie,Harry (Judy), Laurie Collins (Rick), Christy DeWitt (Denny), Mary LaHousse (Robert), Marc (Jane), Billy (Ruth), Anne Zagunis (Jim), Tony (Sue), Joey, Paul (Sherrie). Mary is also survived by 31 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren & 4 great great grandchildren.She is also preceded in death by her son-in law Joe Hendrie and great great granddaughter Addison Carter. Visitation is on Monday, March 9, 2020 from 2:00 – 9:00 pm at The Allen Park Chapel of The Martenson Family of Funeral Homes, 10915 Allen Rd, Allen Park, MI 48101 with a Fr. Saylor Knights of Columbus rosary service at 7:00 pm. A memorial mass will be held on March 10, 2020, at 10:00 am at St. Frances Cabrini Church, 9000 Laurence Ave, Allen Park, MI 48101. Family is requesting memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, be sent to: St. Frances Cabrini Church—Cabrini St. Vincent DePaul 9000 Laurence Ave, Allen Park, MI 48101 Fr.
