Mary was born on June 5, 1931 in Monroe, Michigan to the late Charles and Margaret (Sloan) Verhoeven. She was preceded in death by her sister, Margaret Peruski and nephew, Eric Clark. She is survived by her sisters, Judy Schwabe, Gertrude Verhoeven and Charlene Clark and brother-in-law, Leonard Peruski, all of Michigan. Mary leaves behind one niece, nine nephews and life long friend, Fran Sylvis. Mary began her education career by attending St. Mary Academy in Monroe. She then went to Eastern Michigan and the University of Michigan to get her degrees. Mary began her teaching in a one-room school house in Monroe. She taught a few years on the first grade level. Then, she moved onto the college level and taught at Eastern Michigan, the University of Akron, and Kent State University. When she retired in 1986, Mary was acting chairman of the Early Childhood Department. Over a period of eight years, Mary took many teachers to England to study in the Primary Infant Schools. She volunteered at Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens and was on the Auxiliary Board. Mary loved traveling and enjoyed winters in Venice, FL. She also enjoyed her every Thursday lunches with the Dragonfly Lunch Bunch. Fran gives a big thank you to Mary's helpers from Northeast Ohio Senior Helpers: Carrie, Lorrie, Sammy and Suzanne gave excellent home care and loved her dearly. Fran also wants to thank the AGVNS Hospice. Even though they only spent 5 days with her, she received excellent care. A In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Vincent De Paul Society, Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens or the Charity of your choice.
