Mary Catherine Payne

Payne, Mary Catherine (Swaney); age 81, of Southgate: September 5, 2015. Beloved wife of James; loving mother of Deborah Rebbeck (James), Darlene McCaffery (Kevin), James Jr. (Debra), Timothy (Barbara), Denise Shepherd (Gerald), Kenneth (Renee); Proud and loving Nana to 13 grandchildren, and Great Nana to 5 great-grandchildren; dearest "Mom" to over 50 foreign exchange students. Mary is survived by 5 brothers and 3 sisters. Preceded in death by her parents Charles and Beatrice Swaney. Mary was active in St. Cyprian Parish, including the bus committee in the 1960's which purchased its first bus and she became the bus driver for the school. She was one of the founding members of St. Cyprian Credit Union, which later merged with Good Shepherd Credit Union. She was active in St. Cyprian Ladies Guild, holding various officer and committee leadership roles, including the Christian Service Disabilities Committee. She was an officer of the Praesidium Drum and Bugle Corps Booster Club in the 1960's. She worked for Youth For Understanding placing hundreds of exchange students from various countries with families in the downriver area. She was a committee leader and member of Daughters of Isabella Robert Jones Council, and volunteered her time and talents to various charities and local organizations. She touched the hearts of many and will be deeply missed by all.
