Born in Newton Falls, Ohio, Mary was the daughter of Michael and Bertha (Chopko) Cherney. She married the love of her life, Hubert Steffes, on September 29, 1951 at St. Joseph Catholic Church here in Monroe. Sadly he preceded her in death February 26, 1999. A dedicated homemaker she enjoyed gardening and sewing. She was a faithful member of St. Anne's Catholic Church and volunteered for the Food Closet. She also was a founding member of Heartbeat of Monroe. Mary leaves to cherish her memory her children: Daniel (Debra) Steffes of Ida, Elaine Nickel of Monroe, Nancy (Michael) Miller of Monroe and Marie Nieman of LaSalle; 15 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild; as well as a brother John (Geri) Cherney of Lansing; and 2 sisters Ann Zemeski of Allen Park and Helen Parker of Oregon. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother Michael Cherney. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a memorial contribution in honor of Mary are asked to consider Heartbeat of Monroe.
