Leslie Edmund Schmidtke, age 86 born and raised in Grosse Ile, passed away at his home on October 4, 2024 surrounded by loved ones. He was the beloved husband to his late wife, Kathleen, of 39 years.


Loving dad to Leslie Jr. (Shelley), Lori (William) Lemanske, Lance (Brenda), and Lynne (Christopher) Smereka. Loving grandfather to Jaime, Marcy, Karlee, Laycee, Louie, William Jr., Oscar, Tesia, Egan, Lily, and Sasha. Loving great-grandfather to Penelope and Jack.


Leslie was a respected marine veteran and proud McLouth steel worker. He was a dedicated Grosse Ile DPW employee and Supervisor for 42 years, paired with 44 years as a passionate Grosse Ile firefighter including duties as deputy fire chief. He earned Grosse Ile citizen of the year, Grosse Ile DPS Commissioner, animal welfare advocate and devoted supporter of multiple charitable organizations! Leslie was a faithful husband, dedicated and loving father, affectionate grandfather and adoring great-grandfater.


He will be deeply missed.


Visitation will take place on Wednesday, October 9, 2024 and Thursday, October 10, 2024 at the Trenton Chapel of the Martenson Family of Funeral Homes, 3200 West Rd. Trenton, MI 48183, from 1:00 - 8:00 pm both days. Funeral service will take place on Friday, October 11, 2024 at St. James Episcopal Church, 25150 E River Rd, Grosse Ile Township, MI 48138, at 10:00 am. He will lie in state at 9:30 am. There will be a procession to Michigan Memorial Park Cemetery in Huron Township, MI.
