Kathryn M. Taylor

August 3, 1918 — August 21, 2018

Kathryn M. Taylor

R.I.P. Grandma. Not many make it to 100, and you made it 18 days longer. She graduated from high school in Superior, WI, early and enrolled in the University of Wisconsin in the 1930s—not many women had those opportunities or successes in that time, and she is a testament to progress in equality. She very nobly chose to become a teacher and endured anti Catholic sentiment in Oxford. She taught in Ecorse and River Rouge and had probably outlived a number of her students. She was a strong democrat and believed in equality and security for all. She survived breast cancer twice and was stronger than anyone I know when she lost her husband to pancreatic cancer more than 20 years ago. (She was never interested in meeting other men, either: I remember she told me about a man who tried to get her coffee at a Trenton Senior Citizens Club meeting, obviously a flirting effort; and she shut it down because he put cream and sugar in, and she's a ridiculous Irish Catholic who strictly drinks her coffee black. 😂) Kathryn was born on August 3, 1918 in Superior, Wisconsin and died on August 21, 2018; she was of Trenton. Beloved wife of the late Ralph. Loving mother of Tim (Janet) Taylor and Bob (Merian) Taylor. Proud grandmother of Shannon (Steve) Merritt, Patrick Taylor, Shaun (Kelsey) Taylor, Trisha and Thalia and great grandmother of Kathryn "Kate" McKenzie Merritt. Also survived by two sisters Marilyn Samson and Marjorie McKenzie. Preceded in death by her parents Daniel and Frances (nee: Mooney) McKenzie. She was very proud of her Irish Catholic Heritage. Visitation is on Friday, August 24, 2018 from 4 – 8 pm with a Rosary at 6 pm both at The Trenton Chapel of The Martenson Family of Funeral Homes, 3200 West Rd., Trenton. Kathryn will lie in state on Saturday, August 25, 2018 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Trenton from 10:30 am until the time of the Funeral Liturgy which will begin at 11 am. Interment Michigan Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Detroit.
