Joyce Thomlinson Hartwell

Joyce Thomlinson Hartwell a lifelong resident of Grosse Ile Twp, passed away in the early hours of Monday, December 30, 2024. Beloved mother of Kathleen Levens, Sherry (Jim) Wagner, and Douglas (the late Terri) Hartwell. Cherished Nan of Dr. Eric (Elaine) Levens, Brian Levens, J.D., Matthew (Jin) Levens, Gayle Hartwell, and Bradley (Lindsay) Hartwell. Dearest great-grandmother of Chloe Levens, Grant Davis Levens, Austen Grace Levens, Zoe Elizabeth Levens, Lucas Hartwell, and Lydia Hartwell. Caring aunt of Keith (Suzanne) Thomlinson, Linda (Tom) Lemay, Patti Thomlinson, Janice Nichols, Lisa Thomlinson, and Debra (the late Michael) Pippin. Joyce was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth W. Hartwell, her parents Joseph and Daisy Thomlinson, her siblings Raymond “Ray” Thomlinson (Maggie) and Gwendolyn “Gwen” Brannick (the late Duane), her granddaughter Angela Hartwell, and nephew Lawrence “Larry” Brannick.

Joyce was a bank teller at People’s Bank in Trenton in her early twenties where she met her husband Kenneth Hartwell and they married in 1950. After marriage, Joyce was a homemaker through her adult life, dedicating her care to her children, husband, and home. She enjoyed sewing, baking - making doll cakes and theme birthday cakes, and gardening. She found meaning and great fellowship as a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood women’s organization on Grosse Ile. She was also a longtime volunteer at Wyandotte Hospital in the gift shop. Joyce leaves behind an everlasting legacy and she will be deeply missed by her loving family, extended family and friends.

A memorial gathering will take place on Saturday, January 11, 2025 at Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church located at 7925 Horsemill Rd, 48138. The memorial gathering will begin at 11:00 a.m., followed by the service at noon. Joyce will be inurned at both Michigan Memorial Cemetery Park and Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church at a later date.
