Joseph Paul Berkey

Joseph Paul Berkey, age 101 of Grosse Ile, passed away November 15, 2024.

Born March 15, 1923 in Temerin, Yugoslavia, Joseph was the son of Andrew and Mary Ivanics. He entered the Navy and participated in World War II before he graduated high school. After discharge he finished high school then received his Bachelor's in Education from Wayne State University and his Master's degree from the University of Michigan. He married the love of his life, Ann Holcz, on September 3, 1964. His career was as a Middle School Science teacher with the Detroit Public Schools for many years. Joseph was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Joseph P. Berkey VFW Post 7310-Grosse Ile, where he had served as Commander. He enjoyed gardening and taking care of his home, but his most treasured times were those spent with his family.

Joseph leaves to cherish his memory, Ann, his wife of the past 60 years; a daughter Ann Marie (William) Vis; 4 grandchildren: Kellie Todd, Michelle Todd, Bridget Vis and Aaron (Breanna) Vis; as well as 1 great grandson Ethan Shuford. Sadly Joseph was preceded in death by his parents and a son Gerald Todd.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in honor of Joseph may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Wounded Warrior Project.
