Downey was born on May 25, 1931 in Flint, Michigan and died on January 21, 2022 at Beaumont Hospital Trenton at the age of 90; he was of Brownstown Twp. Beloved husband of the late Merris (nee: Cowell) Downey. Cherished father of Christina (Joseph) Snyder and Sharon (Steven Osentoski and of the late Theresa Downey and the late Allen Dale Cowell. Proud grandpa and papa of Jacob Snyder, Zachary Snyder, Tristan Downey and Tye Downey. Also survived by his nieces, nephews, other loving family and friends. He was also preceded in death by his parents Robert Downey and Echo Simmons; by his aunt Teresa and uncle Joseph Homrich, who raised him; two brothers, Patrick Downey and Jerry Simmons and one sister Jacqueline Paris. After graduating from High School, Joseph proudly served his Country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Joseph’s God, family and church were his love in life. His passion was being a diesel mechanic and he enjoyed reading and had a love for books. He had a desire to always be learning and expanding his knowledge. Memorial contributions to honor his life may be made as the donor chooses. The family prefers that everyone wear a mask for the visitation and service.
