John Lorimer Hutchison

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on March 11, 2025, at the age of 74.

Born on November 10, 1950, in Detroit, Michigan, John was the son of Virginia Hutchison (née Markey) and James Hutchison. Most of Hutch’s youth was spent in Trenton, Michigan, where his towering height made him a standout basketball star for the Trenton Trojans, following in the footsteps of his brother, Jimmy. John’s love for basketball continued through his time at Alma College, where he played the sport while earning his B.A. in History with a focus on East Asia.

After graduating, John returned to the area, where he taught and coached within the Grosse Ile school system. He later transitioned into a successful career as an award-winning industrial salesman in the steel business, a profession that showcased his charisma and geniality.

John was an avid sports enthusiast throughout his life. He cherished spending time with friends and family, attending basketball and football games across the state, especially the Michigan State Spartans and high school playoff games.

In 1979, John met his future wife, Cindy. Their love story took them to Oregon before they were married in Kona, Hawaii, in 1983. Apart from sharing a trip in paradise, John also insisted they visit World War II sites, as visiting historical places was something the two always enjoyed together.

John and Cindy returned to Riverview in 1983, where they started their family. They were blessed with three children: Lauren, Caitlin, and John. John was a devoted father, always providing his children with opportunities to excel in both athletics and academics. He was a constant source of encouragement, cheering them on at events and guiding them through life. The family shared countless memories, including trips to Big Paw on Lake Huron, Greenfield Village, Colonial Williamsburg, and numerous Civil War battle sites, all of which were cherished by John. He was the loudest fan at the game, helped with the paper delivery routes, shared obscure facts, and loved every parent-teacher conference.

As his life progressed, it became ever more clear what mattered most to John. He loved his family, reading newspapers, engaging in conversations, and, of course, watching sports. His optimism, one-of-kind, knee-slapping laugh, comforting advice, and unwavering dedication and generosity to his family will be dearly missed.

John is survived by his loving wife, Cindy; daughters Lauren (Jaime “J.R,” Rivera) and Caitlin; son John; and grandson Reid Rivera, as well as a large circle of family and friends who will carry on his legacy. He is preceded in death by his parents, Virginia and James Hutchison.
