John G. Rapai

John G. Rapai

Born in Antwerp, Ohio, John was the son of Joseph and Rose (Nagy) Rapai. He attended grade school in Antwerp and Ash Center Country School, a one-room school house. He was a 1941 graduate of Carleton High School and Henry Ford Apprentice School. John served his country in the Army Air Corps during World War II from February until February 1946. He was an Airplane Mechanic and honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal. He married Marcella May Gaynier November 29, 1947. They were married 65 years. Sadly she preceded him in death July 14, 2012. John was a Tool & Die Maker for Ford Motor Company for 40 years, working at the River Rouge Plant, old Flat Rock Plant and Monroe Stamping Plant. Retiring in 1981 from Monroe. John was a life member of the Carleton VFW 4093 and Frenchtown Senior Citizens. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and Rockwood Area Historical Society. John also worked in the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, serving the information booth at the Monroe County Courthouse for21 years. John enjoyed being with his family and friends; traveling, ball room dancing, country dancing, woodworking, gardening, camping, fishing and antiquing. He loved Hungarian food and attending the band and sporting events of his grandchildren. John is survived by his children: Sandra (Gregory) Schluge of Afton, Virginia, Dr. Joseph (Kathryn) Rapai of Brighton, Randall Rapai of Monroe, Robin Rapai of Villa Park, Illinois, Rusty (Laura) Rapai of Carleton; grandchildren: Jason, Nathan, Cody, Asia andRenee Rapai, Aaron and Andrea Schluge; sisters: Anna Clavier of Boyne City, Helen Rees of Carleton and Theresa Wegnika of Romulus. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Rose Mills, Marjory Ocha and Catherine Hammer. Memorial contributions to the St. Mary Catholic Church Restoration Fund or Rockwood Area Historical Society.
