Joanne Medved

JoAnne T. Medved, of Grosse Ile, MI. She is survived by her loving husband Marty for 53 wonderful years, her sons, Brian and Martin. Cherished nona to Chanell (Andres) Mendez and great nona to Amelia Lyn Mendez with another great granddaughter arriving in December of this year. Dear sister to Tom (Jackie) Long and sister-in-law to Rosemary Hanlon. Cousin of Linda Fisk and loving friend to so many near and far.

Affectionately known and “Jo” and “Cookie”, her mission while with us all was to take care of her friends and family, always putting others before her own needs, lending a helping hand whenever she felt the need which was often. Whether it was making a homemade meal or delicious baked god to simply lending an ear to listen intently, JoAnne was a generous person.

While not wearing an apron that she and her family considered to be a part of her “uniform” and relaxing in the kitchen with her outstanding cooking and baking skills, JoAnne was an avid reader particularly books that were historical in nature. Knitting was also a hobby she enjoyed over the years creating sweaters, hats, and blankets. She also enjoyed watching classical movies in the comfort of her home.

She was involved in projects helping the Grosse Ile Rotary Club with those that were less fortunate and those who had special needs. It brought a big smile to her face seeing the joy and happiness of others. JoAnne also was active in fraternal activities within the NSS Life (National Slovak Society) organization.

Enjoying the view of the water and landscape of her home-made JoAnne happy to simply stay close to home, but when the opportunities arose, she had two favorite spots for vacation – St. Pete’s Beach, Florida and the Petoskey/Harbor Springs area of Northern Michigan.

In the summer months, JoAnne found relaxation by being pool side, but always making sure the people that were joining her had plenty of food and drink! Going to art shows and farmers markets also were things she enjoyed immensely. She was not one to be the focus of attention and it took a lot of encouragement and insistence by others to have her take a break from doing something (big or small) for everybody else. Her smile, quick wit, laughter, generosity, empathy, and care will truly missed by all who knew her.
