Janice Marie Mathews passed away on June 29, 2019 in Woodhaven, Michigan at the home of her daughter, Judy Griffith. Janice was born October 22, 1926 in Cirtsville, Raleigh County, West Virginia at the home of her maternal grandmother, Della Bertie (Tyree) Davis. She was the daughter of Claude Terrence Hardy and Mary Hartsel Davis. On August 12, 1945 Janice married her East Bank High School beau, Frank Glen Mathews, upon his return from service during World War II. The newlyweds moved to Detroit, Michigan where Frank was employed by the New York Central Railroad. The couple had three children, Judy Sue, Mary Marguerite, and Frank Glen, Jr. In the early 1970’s the family moved back to West Virginia when Frank received a promotion at the railroad. With her family raised, Janice went to work at an upscale dress shop in Charleston where she became a top salesperson and enjoyed modeling in the shop’s annual fashion shows. This was a wonderful match for Janice who was always perfectly groomed and fashionably dressed. Upon retirement, Janice and Frank moved back to Michigan to be near their family. Janice was adored by everyone in her family and beyond. She was a tireless and charming hostess, opening her home to countless celebrations: Thanksgiving, Christmas, and every birthday on the calendar. She loved being with her family and friends. Each child in the family was made to know how unique and loved they were. There were many overnight stays, bedtime sing alongs and special treats. All who knew Janice will say she was the kindest person they’d ever met. She will be missed immeasurably by everyone who was touched by her love and care. Janice was predeceased by her beloved husband, Frank Glen Mathews, and by son, Frank Glen Mathews, Jr., also by brother Robert Terrence Hardy and great-grandson, Nicholas Scott Griffith. She is survived by daughters, Judy Sue Griffith & husband Jim of Woodhaven MI; Mary Marguerite Mathews & husband Robert Tucker of Durham NH; daughter-in-law Katheryn Mathews of Palm Harbor FL, sister Rosalie Saye of Taylor MI, and sister-in-law, Betty Hardy, of Pratt WV. She is also survived by grandchildren, Jeffrey Scott Griffith & wife Susie of Woodhaven, MI; Jennifer Lynne Deboodt & husband Kevin of New Boston MI; and Meryl Marie Kinard & husband Chris of Arlington VA. She leaves behind beloved great-grandchildren Stephanie Lynne McClure, Nicolette Paige McClure, Corey Allen Deboodt and Sean Glen Kinard along with many cherished nieces, nephews and cousins.
