James E. Monroe

James Edward Monroe of Trenton, MI passed away Sunday April 16, 2023 at the age of 93. Beloved husband, father, and grandfather James was an avid gardener and artist. A native of Detroit, MI, James graduated from Michigan Normal College with a degree in Art and Physical Education. He received a Masters in Education at Michigan State University. He remained an avid fan of MSU athletics throughout his entire adult life. He taught art and outdoor education at Monguagon Middle School at Trenton Public Schools for the majority of his career. He also coached Volleyball at Trenton High School and Grosse Isle High School. He served in the US Army during the Korean war prior to his marriage to Beverly Ann Caroline Carlson on January 7, 1961.

James loved gardening, painting, traveling, and feeding the birds everywhere he lived. He has numerous paintings displayed in his home at Hampton Manor of Woodhaven assisted living center and the homes of his family. He was an avid organic gardener and loved watching the birds visit his many bird feeders. He traveled to Scotland, throughout the Caribbean, Hawaii, and all throughout the US with his wife Beverly. James was an active member in the United States Monroe clan and won their Monroe Eagle Award for his lifetime service with the organization. He and his wife Beverly attended many yearly gatherings around the United States and in Scotland. He also served for many years in the Trenton Lions Club. James and Beverly enjoyed their cottage near Lapeer, MI and wintered in Ft Meyers, FL for many years.

Surviving are his daughter Elyse (Jeff) Allen, grandchildren Sandra (Jacob) Olson, James Allen, and Kristin (Andreas) Frey. James was sadly predeceased by Brent Edward Monroe (son), Beverly Ann Monroe (wife), Jean Ann (John) Clemente (sister), Mary Louise (Edward) Barry (sister), Charlotte (Jack) Lynch (sister), and his parents Gene and Irene Monroe. He was loved by many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Visitation for James will take place on Saturday April 22, 2023 from 10-11 am at the Trenton Chapel of The Martenson Family of Funeral Homes located at 3200 West Rd Trenton, MI 48183. The service will be held Saturday April 22, 2023 at 11 a.m. for the public followed by interment at Michigan Memorial Park Cemetery for immediate family.
