James Bernard Werstein

Born May 15, 1927 in London Township, James was the son of Anthony and Margaret (Franzen) Werstein. He faithfully served our country in the United States Army. James married the love of his life, Opal Masson, on May 5, 1951 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Maybee. Sadly she preceded him in death March 27, 2006.

A lifelong Farmer, he also had worked at Kiser-Frazer, was a Woodsman at La-Z-Boy, worked at Banas & Wrobel, and worked over 23 years at Ford Motor Company Ypsilanti Plant. James was a faithful member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Maybee and St. Patrick Catholic Church in Carleton. He was a life member of the Tri-County Sportsman Club, the Michigan United Conservation Club and a member of the Monroe Moose Lodge.

James leaves to cherish his memory his children: Michael Werstein (Tena Groom), Steve (Dawn) Werstein, David (Kirra) Werstein, Ann Werstein and Janice Kiger; Daughter-in-law Karen Werstein ; as well as many beloved grandchildren; great grandchildren and more to come. In addition to his spouse and parents, he was preceded in death by a son Daniel; son-in-law Ricky Kiger, and 7 siblings. He is also survived by youngest brother Frank Werstein.

James loved playing cards and being with family. He also enjoyed spending time up North in Harrison cutting wood and eating his bacon over the fire. Jim and Opal loved visiting the Casino and he continued that spirit after her death. In the last year he channeled that energy into Lottery scratch-offs. He will be sorely missed by every one that ever met him including his honorary family in Maybee. We also want to appreciate everyone at Harmony Hospice – they were the best.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in honor of James may be made to St. Patrick School in Carleton
