Born in Monroe, Hobie was the son of Hobart and Goldie (Lazette) Meyers. He faithfully served his country in the United States Army during World War II from April 1943 until December 1945 with the 246th Combat Engineers. He saw action in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe, as well as the Invasion of Normandy at Omaha Beach and the Battle of the Bulge. Hobie earned the European/African/Middle Eastern Theatre Medal with Five Bronze Stars, the Presidential Unit Citation, Good Conduct Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the Army of Occupation of Germany Medal and four Overseas Service Bars. He returned to marry the love of his life, Elta Benore, on November 8, 1947 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Monroe. Sadly she preceded him in death September 12, 2013. Hobie worked as a Cutting Operator at River Raisin Paper Company and Union Camp for over 44 years, retiring in 1987. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a Lifetime Member of VFW Post 1138. Hobie leaves to cherish his memory his children: Thomas (Micky) Meyers of Monroe and Sharon (Thomas) Smith of Carleton; a son-in-law James Clark of Prudenville, Michigan; four grandchildren: Jeffrey Smith, Jessica Mueller, Stacy Demer and Melanie Merrifield; four great grandchildren: Kyle, Samantha, Sofia and Sawyer; as well as a sister Joyce (Sonny) Poley of LaSalle. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter Suzanne Clark; four brothers Calvin Meyers, Ellery Meyers, Louis Meyers, Samuel Meyers; and three sisters: Viola Bivins, Agnes Shopshire and Carol Lyons. The family would like to express a sincere Thank You to the staff and residents at the Lutheran Home for their care and friendship of Hobie. Those wishing to make a memorial contribution in Hobie's honor are asked to consider the VFW Post 1138 Building Fund.
