Hector S. Hernandez

Hector S. Hernandez, age 87, of Taylor, Michigan, passed away on March 1, 2025. Hector was born in Detroit, Michigan, on April 1, 1937. Hector lived a life filled with love, faith, and joy. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Telesforo and Maria Dolores Hernandez; his cherished wife of 53 years, Maria Trinidad; and his sisters, Elva Castillo and Thelma Martinez. He is survived by 28 adoring nieces and nephews, and many godchildren, who will forever treasure his warmth and kindness.

Hector’s life was a testament to faith and resilience. When he was just two years old, Hector experienced a miracle. It began when he fell from a second-story porch and suffered severe internal injuries and a cracked skull. His condition was critical and doctors told his parents there was little hope for recovery. He was then given his last rites. The next morning, Hector’s mother, Maria Dolores, sought out Father Solanus Casey. Father Solanus placed his hand on her head, prayed with her, and then told her, “God has done what the doctors could not. Your son will be fine. Go in peace.” When Maria Dolores returned to the hospital, she was met with an astonishing sight—Hector was conscious, stood up in his crib, and asked to go home. The doctors were at a loss to explain his sudden recovery. Years later, representatives from the Father Solanus Guild visited Maria Dolores to interview her. This encounter is now documented at the Guild as one of Father Solanus' miracles. In 2017, Blessed Father Solanus Casey was beatified, a further affirmation of the profound role faith played in Hector’s life.

Raised in Southwest Detroit, Hector and his family were devoted parishioners of Ste. Anne de Detroit, now the Basilica of Ste. Anne de Detroit. He attended Western High School and the Detroit College of Business. After graduation, Hector served his country in the United States Army.

In 1963, Hector met the love of his life, Maria Trinidad, better known as Trini, on a visit to Mexico. It was love at first sight. Their love story was one for the ages—an instant, unwavering bond built on deep devotion and mutual admiration. Together they created a life rich in love, faith, and shared passions.

Hector built a successful career at Great Lakes Steel as a Systems Engineer while also pursuing his many interests. He was an avid golfer, with an impressive five handicap. He and Trini often played together, winning many tournaments over the years. After retirement, they spent their winters in Mexico, cherishing the culture and warmth of their second home.

A gifted musician, Hector performed in a mariachi band for years, and often brought his guitar to family gatherings where he filled the room with his beautiful voice and guitar playing.

Hector’s unwavering faith was the foundation of his life. For over 50 years, he was an active member of the Cursillo movement, a faith leader, and member of the choir at his lifelong parish, Basilica of Ste. Anne de Detroit. His dedication to the Archdiocese of Detroit Catholic community was recognized in 2002 when he was honored with the Juan Diego Award.

Hector’s greatest joys were his beloved Trini, his family in both the United States and Mexico, and the faith community that shaped his life. He was known for his infectious positivity—always greeting others with a smile and responding “marvelous” whenever asked how he was doing. He called everyone amigo and truly embodied the spirit of Christian love.

To all who knew him, Hector was “THE GREATEST” and everyone’s marvelous amigo!

In lieu of flowers, donations made in Hector’s name would be appreciated, sent to The Cursillos in Christianity Movement in the Archdiocese of Detroit.
