Hal Akershoek

Hal Akershoek, age 63, of Trenton, passed away peacefully on Friday June 18, 2021 following a short illness. Hal was born on March 31, 1958 to Harold and Mildred (Johnson) Akershoek. He attended Trenton High School, and received his Bachelor’s degree in Marketing from Wayne State University in 1981. In 1984, Hal acquired Olds’ Flower Shop. Despite limited experience, his creativity and outgoing personality proved to be a perfect match for the floral profession. Over the course of 37 years the flower shop “blossomed.” Hal touched the lives of countless people and businesses in the Downriver area by providing flower arrangements for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, holidays, special events, and funerals. Anyone who ever phoned the store will instantly remember Hal’s cheerful voice, “Olds’ Flower Shop!” Hal was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Trenton, and was also an accomplished calligrapher, pianist, and avid fan of Motown music. Left to cherish Hal’s memory is his mother, Mildred Akershoek, sister, Carla Akershoek (Pete VanDeRiet), and niece, Lauren VanDeRiet, all of Des Moines, Iowa. He is also survived by aunts, an uncle, and several cousins throughout Michigan. Hal was predeceased by his father, Harold Akershoek. In honor of Hal’s memory, donations can be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association at www.mda.org. Services will be scheduled at a later date and announced on Hal’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/hal.akershoek and through St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
