George Albert Steinman, of Monroe, died on Tuesday, 17 May 2022, after some sixteen days in hospital, suffering from CoViD-19. Born 25 July 1928 in Monroe to Henry Allen and Esther Ruth (Van Slambrouck) Steinman, their third child, George, began his career as a house painter and remodeler in his father's business before setting out on his own. He was so proud of obtaining his Michigan "Maintenance and Alterations" license, that he still carried the card in his wallet, though it expired in 1985! On 22 May 1954, he married Shirley Mary Wright, of Detroit, Michigan, whom he lost to Alzheimer’s after 65 years of marriage. George and Shirley had three sons and two daughters. An avid handyman, George did nearly all the work of building the young family’s second home on Vivian Road, later moving to a larger farm on Vivian, where he lived independently before being hospitalized. George had a lifetime love of photography, filming weddings and other events in his youth, maintaining a home darkroom for many years, and playing a leading role in the Monroe Camera Club, for which he was a founder of that club’s Digital Darkroom group. He was also a member of the Monroe Coin Club, and volunteered as a teacher’s aid at Triumph Academy in Frenchtown. An avid food gardener, he and Shirley grew a good portion of their own food. George was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and siblings Hester Adeline (spouse Milward) Beaudry, Lillian Sylvia (spouse Charles) Grant, Henry Allen Steinman, Jr., Joseph Delano Steinman, and by his brother-in-law, Jacob (“Jake") Richard Richter. He is survived by sisters Barbara (“Bobbie") Ann Richter and Winifred (“Wennie") Ann (spouse Ben) Anderson, sisters-in-law Betty Jo (Grim) Steinman and Irene Mary (Anson) Steinman, and children Jan Wright (spouse Cleome) of Bellingham, Washington, Lauda Marie (spouse Geoff) Sisung of Sarasota, Florida, Kurt Josef (spouse Jenise) of Monroe, Karl George (spouse Marilyn) of Monroe, and Gretchen (spouse Alex) Contreras, of Ypsilanti, Michigan, and 20 grandchildren and step-grandchildren, and 18 step-great-grandchildren. At George’s request, no funeral will be held. He will be remembered at a gathering this summer.
