Born in Toledo, Garry was the son of Robert and Viola (Loomis) Harter. He honorably served his country with the United States Army during the Vietnam War from July 22, 1963 until July 9, 1966. Garry received the Vietnam Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Combat Infantryman's Badge. He married Lynn McCloskey on September 16, 1972. Garry was a Self Employed Mechanic and also worked at Michigan Gas Utilities, retiring in 2005. A member of the VFW Post 1138 Monroe, Garry enjoyed working on cars and listening to Country Music as well as being an avid NASCAR Racing fan and Detroit Tigers Baseball fan. Garry leaves to cherish his memory his children: Christopher Harter of Atlanta, Georgia and Emily Harter and her fiancé Stanley Muvirimi of Novi; brothers: Robert (Sandra) Harter Jr. of LaSalle, Charles (Donna) Harter of Texas and Scott Harter of Erie; an uncle Ernel Harter of Toledo as well as his ex-wife Lynn Harter of Atlanta, Georgia. Sadly he was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter Kathryn and a sister Ruth Ann Harter. Those wishing to make a memorial contribution in honor of Garry are asked to consider the Vietnam Veterans of America.
