Esther E. Broughman

Esther Eleanor Williams Broughman (Born April 13, 1925; gone to rest April 23, 2020). Esther will be greatly missed by her family. She died of natural causes, passing in her sleep after a long and beautiful life. She and her husband Herb, who passed in 2018, were married for 73 years, spending most of those years in Lincoln Park before moving to Attria King Haven assisted living in Riverview. Esther and Herb had seven children: sons Ron, Greg and Kent, and daughters Jill and Janis, of Michigan; and sons Gary and Alan of Florida. Esther is survived by 17 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. She was born and grew up in Girard, Illinois, one of four children. Brother Sterling still lives to carry her memory. Esther met her future husband in Springfield, Illinois, where he was stationed with the Army Air Corp during World War II. When the war ended, they moved to the Detroit area, where they raised their family. Esther had a deep and abiding love of God and passed her spiritual heritage on to her children. She was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church. At the time of her passing she was a member of St. Paul’s in Trenton. She taught Sunday School at Peace Lutheran in Southgate, where many of the children were confirmed, and later she and Herb transferred to Calvary Lutheran in Lincoln Park where several of the children also attended the church’s school. She was known for her skills as a seamstress and while at Calvary sewed cheerleader outfits and many costumes for school productions. She could sew almost anything, from Halloween costumes to prom dresses, and did so on many occasions for her children and grandchildren. Esther’s passing leaves a sadness and a void for her children and grandchildren, but also many warm and heartfelt memories. Many cousins and their children have reached out to express their fond memories as well. Her legacy is a belief that life is beautiful and that we are meant to walk confidently in God’s Grace and goodness. A memorial service will be planned for a later date so that everyone will be able to celebrate Esther's life.
