Elsie Martin July 5, 1925 – March 29, 2023. Age 97 of Allen Park, Michigan.
A selfless and loving mom and grandma like no other. She joyfully, humbly, unconditionally loved, and gently doted on her family bringing instant smiles from both parties as soon as she entered the room. Doing their best to carry on her legacy of sunshine are her children Ronald (Louise) Martin, Kevin (Randee) Martin, and Karen (Dr. Mark) Laszlo, her younger brother Roop Doumanian, 7 adoring grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews and grands of each who also think the world of her. Never wanting the limelight, she preferred working tirelessly behind the scenes. She is pre-deceased by her husband of over 50 years, Chelso Martin.
Elsie worked as an executive secretary to an attorney at a prestigious insurance company in the top of the Penobscot building where her top-notch organizational skills, shorthand, and over 90 wpm on a manual typewriter were highly valued. She also worked at Fort Wayne in Detroit helping to manufacture WWII supplies.
Once her oldest was born, Elsie became a stay-at-home mom. She was a master at turning the simplest of activities into treasured traditions with her children and grandchildren. With just one car in the family she managed to attend all of her children’s athletic events and band performances, was an avid bowler in a league for years with her sister and sister-in-law, and played monthly pinochle with siblings and their wives. As the grandchildren grew, she attended their events, too. In her early 60’s she returned to work as a part-time secretary with Domino’s Pizza for her daughter Karen. Elsie taught herself how to type on an electric typewriter which was a precursor to the multiple computers she learned to surf the web and email. In her early 70’s she biked 8 miles around Mackinaw Island with family. She nurtured 3 wonderful children who remain close to this day.
