Dr. Robert J. Solomon

Beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, Robert was born in Masontown, PA in 1924 and was the son of Asber and Sylvia Solomon. He married the love of his life, Merle, in 1948. He honorably served his country in both the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force during World War II and the Korean War. He attended Georgetown and Catholic Universities, and obtained his medical degree from the George Washington School of Medicine in 1949. Throughout his military career, "Doc" and his family lived in Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado and Minnesota in addition to the Detroit area, and he served as Chief of Medicine and Chief of Respiratory and Communicable Diseases while in Texas. Following his discharge in 1957, Doc and his family settled in Grosse Ile, MI and he joined a private practice, Associated Physicians. Dedicated to his practice and his patients, he served at times as Chief of Staff at Outer Drive Hospital, as a Director for a Michigan HMO and as President and Director of the practice. Following his retirement in 1987, he stayed active in the medical field through consulting on risk management, quality assurance and utilization review. In his free time, Doc enjoyed reading, golf and volunteered with the Grosse Ile Rotary Club. Bob was preceded in death by his wife Merle, his parents and four brothers. He leaves to cherish his memory his seven children, Bob, Laura, George, Harold (Cindy), Carol, Cathy (Paul) Smolak and Doug (George Crowley), his brother Ameen (Fran), his grandchildren and his great grandchildren, as well as many loving nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a memorial contribution in Doc's honor are asked to consider the Grosse Ile Volunteer Fire Department.
