Dr. John J. Hood

Hood, John J., Dr. Age 82. April 10, 2014 of Grosse Ile. Beloved husband of Elizabeth Ann (nee: Hughes). Loving father of John (Penny), Mary Jo (John) Triano, the late Grace Huber, Beth (Roy) Baker and Susan (Dwayne) Williams. Father-in-law to Bruce Huber. Proud grandfather of Samantha, Nicholas, Elizabeth, Kathryn, Christina (Matt), Amanda, John, Michael, Dai and Xavier. Dearest brother of Bert (Sandra) and Margaret (Peter) Frijkowski. Also survived by other loving family and friends. John was preceded in death by his parents Jack and Mabelle (nee: Gruelich) and his brothers William and Michael. Written in Dr. Hood's own words: After graduation I worked and went to U of D part time. I was thinking about going into Education so I switched to Wayne. But the draft was breathing down my neck and I didn't want to die so I joined the Naval Aviation Cadets and was on orders to Great Lakes. Then I was drafted by the Army. I said "sorry but I'm a sailor". It turned out that the Army had dibs and off I went for two years. (The Navy would have required four years.) I applied for Anti-Aircraft and Guided Missiles Officer Candidate School and was accepted. The Korean Conflict ended while we were in school and we were allowed to "give up" our commission after graduation. We then avoided the extra eighteen months we owed the Army. A side benefit was that I had time to take several classes at Texas Western while waiting for my discharge at the repo-depo at Fort Bliss El Paso. I went home and married Betty Hughes, Katie O'Brien's friend from Adrian. Betty was teaching on Grosse Ile so that was where we started. I got a BA in Sociology and Masters in Education and three children. My sociology concentration was in social disorganization and juvenile crime which lead to an offer to teach secondary special education in the Madison District. After three years I became an Elementary Principal and worked my way through two more kids (that makes five) and my Doctorate from U of M in Educational Sociology. I ended up as Asst. Superintendent of Schools and retired in 1992. We returned to Grosse Ile and now have ten grandchildren and two step Grand Children. Life has been good!
