Hoshaw, Cheryl L., age 78 of Alger, passed away December 4th, 2016. Beloved wife to Joseph A. Hoshaw Sr. Loving mother to Joseph A. Hoshaw Jr. (Mary), Dawn M. Bowser (James), William T. Hoshaw (Ameena) and Robert D. Hoshaw (Laura). Proud grandmother to Eric and Ryan Hoshaw; Matthew, Steven, Patrick and Rachel Bowser; Jessica and Jacob Hoshaw; Matthew Miller, Christopher Miller and Evan Hoshaw. Caring great grandmother to Dominic Bowser, Giovanni Miller, Yesenia Miller, and Mariana Miller. Dear sister to her brother Thomas H. Kelly, and sister-in-law to Vivian Valentino, Margie Johnson, Georgia Collins, Ilene Sams, Linda Schaffner. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, and many other loving family members and friends. Cheryl and her husband, Joseph, were married in 1956 in Warren, MI. They lived in Lincoln Park briefly, and purchased their first home in Southgate, Michigan, in 1957. The couple and their four children moved to Trenton in 1965, and lived there until 1985. They were members of St. Timothy Catholic Church during that time. Cheryl was an accomplished seamstress, knitter, painter and award-winning quilter. She was the creator of more than 100- bed-size quilts and 100s of other quilted items ranging from oven mitts, to Christmas tree skirts, to throw pillows. While living in Trenton, Cheryl was a member of Trenton Quilters. After learning to sew at a young age and make clothes for herself and her family, she went on to learn how to knit and crochet. Her skill with a needle and thread, along with a sewing machine, eventually led to her involvement with, and passion, for quilting. Cheryl not only made a voluminous number of quilts and other items, but also taught the craft to hundreds of others. In 1985, Cheryl and Joseph moved from Trenton to New Baltimore, Michigan, where they opened a quilting and craft store in a 125-year old historic home. Cheryl, her husband, and family renovated near the city's downtown area. Along with selling quilts, fabrics, other quilting supplies, and other hand-crafted items, she also taught quilting classes in a classroom at the store. In 1999, the couple moved to Alger, Michigan, where they have resided ever since in the Forest Lake community. During their time there, they have been active members of the Forest Lake Property Association. Cheryl was a member of the local quilting group and continued to make quilts, sew, and spend quality time with her children and grandchildren. Family members were frequent visitors throughout the year, and each year the couple hosted a special family get-together at the lake for Father's Day weekend. During that time they also travelled extensively throughout the United States, and also to Ireland and Europe. While she lived in Alger, Cheryl was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5-9pm, and also Thursday from 1-9pm, at the Trenton Chapel of The Martenson Family of Funeral Homes. A funeral Mass will be held Friday, in-state at 930am with Mass at 10am, at St. Tim's Catholic Church in Trenton. Procession to Holy Sepulchre for burial will follow after the luncheon at church.
