Carmen Bonita Golden

Born in Toledo, Carmen was the daughter of Raymond Ward and Honoria Teresa Magris Tarrio Ward. She married the love of her life, Oliver J. Golden, Jr. on December 7, 1963. (A day that will live in infamy, he loved to joke.) He preceded her in death October 6, 2001. A dedicated homemaker, the family lived on West Elm Ave. for over 30 years. Carmen also managed McNally Cottage, a bed and breakfast on Mackinac Island, from 1985 to 2001. She loved summer life on the Island, was a docent at the Governor's Mansion, and kept many close friends. She was a 40-year member and volunteer of the Thrift Shop Association as well as a longtime volunteer and former President for the American Cancer Society and the American Red Cross. She was a three-time cancer survivor, but dedicated to raising funds for cancer research and treatment since the death of her mother from cancer in 1951. The Thrift Shop Christmas program for families was a particular favorite. Carmen was well known for gathering friends and for her love of cooking. Carmen painted and played piano, as well, and loved art, music and reading. Carmen is survived by her children: Lisa Golden of Monroe, John (Karen) Golden of Grand Haven and Michael (Yalta Alvarado-Golden) Golden of Woodhaven as well as three grandchildren: Gabrielle (William) Valezano, Jr. of Shabbona, Illinois, Ysabela and Xavier Meyer Golden of Grand Haven. Those wishing to make a memorial contribution in honor of Carmen are asked to consider the American Cancer Society, the Thrift Shop Association of Monroe or the Mackinac Island Public Library.
