Born in Maybee, Carl was the son of Anton and Margaret (Franzen) Werstein. He married the love of his life, Nancy Quermbach, on April 19, 1952. Sadly she preceded him in death February 2, 2009. A lifelong farmer, Carl also worked as a Machine Operator with Ford Motor Company for 29 ½ years, retiring in 1986. Carl was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Maybee and the Maybee Farmer's Co-Op. He enjoyed anything to do with horses (riding, plowing, showing), he enjoyed playing cards, especially pinochle and euchre, along with traveling and bowling. Carl is survived by his children: John "Jack" (Marilyn) Werstein of Ypsilanti, Ruth (Michael) Holt of Monroe, Anthony (Julie) Werstein of Maybee, Carl (Diane) Werstein, Jr. of Maybee and Chris (Cynthia) Werstein of Hartland; a daughter-in-law Marie Werstein of Milan; as well as two brothers: James Werstein of Maybee and Frank (Mary) Werstein of Monroe. He also had fourteen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Carl was preceded in death by three children: Donald Werstein, and two infant daughters: Karen and Susan; a brother Edward Werstein and five sisters: Helen Eisenhauer, Clara Hammer, Anna Werstein, Agnes Steward and Rose Werstein. Friends may call today (Friday) from 1pm until 9pm at the Liedel Chapel-Martenson Family of Funeral Homes, 9061 Raisin St. in Maybee, where the Rosary will be recited at 7pm with Deacon George Cousino. Funeral services celebrating Carl's life will be Saturday. He will lie in state from 10am until a Mass of Resurrection at 11am from St. Joseph Catholic Church in Maybee. Fr. Steve Mateja, pastor of the church will officiate. Burial will follow next to his wife in St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorial contributions in honor of Carl may be made to the Pearl M. Quermbach Memorial Scholarship fund at Monroe County Community College or Devine Grace Parish.
