Irene Mary Piccone was born in Italy on November 29, 1922, the fourth child of Marziale and Flora Piccone. After growing up in and around Detroit, and working as a medical technologist, she decided to go to law school. This proved a good choice, since she graduated from Detroit College of Law as the class valedictorian. This success won her a scholarship for further study at Harvard Law School. Upon graduation she worked for the NLRB, then a private firm, finally establishing her own practice in family law.

In her practice as well as outside of it, Irene devoted herself to helping others. She was known for her dedication to advancing women’s rights and for her many charitable contributions. She was a longtime member of the Northville Democratic Club and the National Organization for Women.

In her free time, Irene enjoyed traveling and attending the opera and symphony with her family and friends. She was well known for her sense of humor and her gift for telling a funny story. She was greatly beloved by her family, who could always depend on her to lend a hand when needed. She will be greatly missed.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents, and her brothers and sisters, Carmine Piccone, Dr. Luisa (Piccone) Strachan, Donato Piccone, and Daisy Gloria Piccone. She is survived by her sister Giacinta Gualtieri, nieces Carmine Wood and Teresa Gualtieri-Clark, and nephew William Strachan. Great aunt of Isabella and Alexander, the late Luisa, Elizabeth and the late Steven.
