Dorothy McCoy, age 95 of Rockwood, passed away on Tuesday, August 23, 2022 under hospice care. She died at Rivergate Terrace Nursing Facility in Riverview, Michigan after a long illness.
She was born September 8, 1926 in Mount Vernon, Pennsylvania to John and Marie (Preston) Kerestan. She was the oldest of three children. She moved with her family to Monessen, Pennsylvania in 1930, where she graduated from high school in 1944.
During her early teens, she was trained as a soprano contralto operatic singer at the Pittsburgh Opera Society. After graduation from high school, she began working at Pittsburgh Steel-Monessen Works to support the war effort, which was at the height of World War II.
After the war ended, she met the love of her life, Robert D McCoy, while on a blind date. Dorothy and Robert were married on August 29, 1950.
From their union, they had two children: Robert Jr and Jeffrey. They lived in West Newton, Pennsylvania until the mid-1960s when the family moved to Michigan for employment reasons.
Surviving is her son, Robert (Barbara) McCoy Jr and grandson, Robert A. Also surviving is a sister-in-law, Donna Kerestan with other nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert D; son, Jeffrey; her parents, John and Marie Kerestan; her sister, Dolly (Marie) Demczyk, brother-in-law Peter Demczyk; her brother, John Kerestan Jr; and one nephew.
Internment has taken place. A memorial service is being planned in Pennsylvania for later this year.
The family would like to extend a big thank you to the nurses and doctors affiliated with Rivergate Terrace during her stay. They also would like to thank Accent Care Hospice for their kindness and guidance through this difficult time.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in honor of Dorothy can be made to the donor's choice.
